Earn the Accredited Financial Counselor® Certification

The Department of Human Sciences, in collaboration with the College of Social Work, is offering a new, three-course education program that qualifies students to take the Accredited Financial Counselor® (AFC®) certification exam.

The Accredited Financial Counselor® provides you with the knowledge and experience to meet individuals and families where they are, helping them build a strong financial foundation, realize their goals, and achieve lasting financial well-being.

  • An enhancement to your degree, the AFC® certification represents a high standard of excellence in the field of financial counseling and education.
  • The education prepares you to guide clients through a holistic counseling framework of life-cycle financial education. 

Pathway to the Accredited Financial Counselor® Certification:

  1. Complete three required courses at Ohio State:
    • CSCFFS 2260 Family Financial Management
    • CONSCI 2910 Consumer Problems and Perspectives
    • HDFS 2210 Helping Skills in Context or SOCWORK 3501 Engagement and Interviewing Skills
  2. Pass the AFC® certifying exam
  3. Work 1,000 hours in financial counseling or financial education
  4. Agree to abide by the AFC® Code of Ethics
